Iceland Post-Study Job Search: 18-Month Graduate Route

The Directorate of Immigration announced that qualifying university graduates may renew student residence for up to 18 months after graduation to seek employment based on their qualifications. That makes older articles referring to a different maximum period unreliable for 2026 planning.

Confirm that the completed programme is a qualifying bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree at an Icelandic university and follow the current renewal instructions before the existing permit expires.

Use Iceland's official vacancy channels and direct employer research for the exact occupation. A small market can have a real shortage in one field and almost no openings in another, so national slogans such as 'Iceland needs workers' are not enough evidence.

Record contract length, work location, language, salary and whether the employer has hired international graduates before. Housing availability around Reykjavík or a regional job can be just as decisive as the vacancy itself.

Iceland also changed student employment rights in 2026: holders of valid student residence permits no longer need a separate work permit and may work up to 60% of full-time employment during study periods, with full-time work during scheduled breaks under the official conditions.

That reform is useful experience-building, but the post-study renewal is still a separate residence decision. Keep the two rules distinct when planning the transition.
