Finland Student Work Rules 2026: Average 30 Hours per Week

Migri says a study-permit holder may work in paid employment in any field for an average of 30 hours per week. That means an individual week can exceed 30 hours if the overall average remains within the rule at the end of the relevant period; full-time holiday work can therefore be possible without creating a separate summer rule like Denmark's.

Keep a simple annual or monthly hour record instead of checking only the current week. The employer also has a duty to verify the work right.

Migri explains that the ordinary 30-hour limit does not apply in the same way when the internship or diploma/thesis work is part of the degree under the official conditions. The academic connection should be established as part of the arrangement rather than invented after the work has already happened.

Ask the university and employer to document the study connection clearly when relying on this treatment.

Do not wait until the study permit is almost finished to learn whether the occupation is regulated or whether the preferred city has enough relevant jobs.
