Sweden Student Work Rules 2026: New 15-Hour Limit Explained

The Swedish Migration Agency says new higher-education rules introduced a work limitation for many first- and second-cycle students. For the affected permit group, the starting point is a maximum of 15 hours per week during semesters rather than the older assumption of unrestricted work alongside studies.

Because the rule depends on permit date and study category, check the actual residence decision before copying the 15-hour number into a personal plan.

The official guidance lists exceptions for work that forms part of the education and certain work at the higher-education institution, and it allows broader work during June, July and August. There is also specific guidance for students who have completed sufficient higher education and are in the remaining validity period of the permit.

Keep payslips and employment evidence because an extension application can require documentation showing how much you worked.

Use Arbetsförmedlingen/Platsbanken and university career channels to see what actually exists in the study city. Stockholm and Gothenburg may have more international employers, but customer-facing roles can still expect Swedish.

If Swedish is the main missing condition across otherwise suitable vacancies, a targeted language plan can improve both student-job and post-study options more than sending more applications.

A student-work right ends with the study-status framework; it is not automatically the right to remain after graduation. Sweden has a separate residence route for qualifying graduates to look for work or explore business opportunities.

Use the final semester to move from part-time job searching to graduate-role targeting and to verify whether the future occupation has a licensing requirement.
